Via del Corso, Rome

Corso runs mostly from north to south. To the north, it connects the northern entrance gate to the city, Porta del Popolo and its square, Piazza del Popolo, with the heart of the city at Piazza Venezia, at the foot of the Capitoline Hill. In Piazza del Popolo, Via del Corso is flanked by two Baroque churches, Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto, and along the street also several churches of San Carlo al Corso, San Giacomo in Augusta, the Church of the Gesú e Maria, Column Square with an antique column of Marcus Aurelius.

From around 600 AD, the Corso hosted a charitable center related to the nutrition of the population in Santa Maria in Via Lata, and granaries. In the Middle Ages, Via Lata, the current Corso, actually marked the border of the city, which mainly developed south and east of it. It is also for this reason that the hospital of San Giacomo degli Incurabili was built here in 1339.

From the fifteenth century Via del Corso became a fashionable street for new or renovated churches and new palaces for the nobility.
